I didn't know if I was going to like Las Vegas. While I love exploring new places, it's generally the great outdoors I seek out more so than concrete jungles. That being said, some of my favorite places on earth are cities - New Orleans has my heart. But upon arriving, I couldn't stop from pressing my forehead against the Uber driver's car window. I would have hung out of it, if it wasn't rather chilly and raining - which it proceeded to do the entire trip.
I was obsessed with the lights - the sparkling twinkle of every building, billboard sign, sequin dress, flashing casino slot machine. It was all so dazzling! The colors, the music, the constant *ching ching* sound of the slots, the wood clacking of the roulette tables, the street performers - in fact it reminded me quite a bit of New Orleans - only less French, more western, almost as much debauchery.
I was quite sad that we were in the desert and it continued to rain the entire time, and would not even let up for my bride on her wedding day. We didn't get to do everything I wanted to - I'm dying to go see Fremont Street, the Neon Museum, and make my way out to the desert next time.
You should definitely take advantage of all the free activities to partake in even on the strip. Honestly though, I'm perfectly happy walking around for hours just people-watching, sliding the occasional coin into the penny slots (especially because you'll get a free drink if you hang around), and drooling over all the beautiful colors, decor, and very, very expensive shops.
The Bellagio offers free access to their Botanic Gardens, The Flamingo has it's own complimentary wildlife sanctuary (leave it to me to travel half a country away to stand and watch fish for an hour), the water fountain showing at the Bellagio (yes, as in the one from Ocean's 11) goes on for hours starting at 3pm and it's actually not the same one over and over, Fremont Street has a nightly light/laser show, and while we passed it, we totally forgot to head back to the 'Welcome to Las Vegas' sign, but definitely go snap a picture there too!
I definitely want to head back ASAP!
